For decades, physicians suspected a venereal cause but could not identify the agent.

3️⃣ 1970s–1980s – Harald zur Hausen & HPV

Demonstrated that human papillomavirus (HPV), not herpes, causes cervical cancer.

His work led to a Nobel Prize in 2008.

4️⃣ 1990s–2000s – From Discovery to Prevention

HPV vaccines (Gardasil, Cervarix) and Pap/HPV testing created a prevention system that turned a once-major killer into a largely preventable disease.
